September in the Garden: Gardening Jobs For September
As the days shorten and a crispness enters the air, September offers a fantastic opportunity to refresh your garden and prepare it for the seasons ahead. At Woodbank Garden Centre, serving the Bingley to Skipton area, we’re here to help you every step of the way!
Floral Fantasies: September’s Planting & Prepping!
-
Time to Plant Spring Bulbs: Get a head start on next year’s spring spectacle! Pop in your daffodil, crocus, and hyacinth bulbs now for an explosion of colour when spring arrives. (Available at Woodbank Garden Centre today!)
-
Sow Hardy Annuals for Next Year: For early summer blooms, sow hardy annuals like calendula and love-in-a-mist directly into your borders.
-
Divide Perennials: This is the perfect month to divide overgrown perennial clumps. It’s great for the plants and allows you to expand your displays!
-
Take Cuttings: Extend the life of your favourite plants like geraniums and fuchsias by taking cuttings now.
-
Keep Deadheading: Continue to remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms and maintain a tidy garden appearance.
-
Harvest Seeds: Collect and store seeds from your best-performing flowers for future planting.
-
New Shrubs & Trees: With the soil still warm and moisture returning, September is an excellent time to plant new woody specimens.
Lawn Care: Autumn Revival!
-
Scarify & Aerate: Your lawn has worked hard all summer. Help it recover by scarifying to remove thatch and aerating to improve air and water penetration to the roots.
-
Repair Bare Patches: Sow new grass seed on worn areas – the conditions are perfect for quick germination.
-
Autumn Lawn Feed: Apply a specific autumn lawn feed to strengthen your grass for the winter and encourage healthy root growth. (All your lawn care essentials are in stock!)
Bountiful Harvests & Future Sowing!
-
Harvest Main Crops: Enjoy the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labour. Harvest pumpkins, squashes, maincrop potatoes, and all your ripe tree fruits.
-
Prune Soft Fruit: Prune out the old canes of summer-fruiting raspberries and give your blackcurrant and gooseberry bushes a trim.
-
Sow for Continuous Harvest: Keep your kitchen supplied with fresh greens by sowing winter salads. Overwintering broad beans and onions can also be sown now.
-
Frost Protection: Be mindful of cooler nights and have cloches or fleece ready to protect any vulnerable crops.
Garden Housekeeping!
-
Clean Up: Clear out summer bedding and give your greenhouse or cold frame a thorough clean ready for autumn.
-
Compost Away! All those fallen leaves and spent plant materials are perfect for your compost heap.
-
Help Wildlife: Keep bird feeders topped up and consider leaving some natural shelter for insects by creating leaf piles.
-
Safe Pathways: Keep paths and patios free from fallen leaves to prevent slips.
