Creating Your Indoor Oasis: A Guide for National Houseplant Week 8th – 14th January

Welcome to National Houseplant Week! Here at Woodbank Garden Centre, we know that gardening doesn’t have to stop just because it’s cold outside. Bringing the “outside in” is one of the best ways to stay connected to nature during the British winter.

Finding the Right Spot The biggest secret to houseplant success is matching the plant to the light in your room.

  • Low Light: If you have a north-facing room or a darker hallway, look for Aspidistra (the Cast Iron Plant) or Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen). They are tough and don’t mind a bit of shade. You can read more on our top 10 easy care houseplants here

  • Bright, Indirect Light: Most tropical plants, like the Monstera Deliciosa, love a bright room but keep them away from direct scorching sun (though that’s rarely a problem in January in Bingley!).

Winter Care Tips: Remember, plants grow much more slowly in the winter. Our top tip? Check before you water. Stick your finger an inch into the soil; if it’s still damp, leave it for a few more days. Most houseplants are killed by kindness (overwatering) rather than neglect!

The “Wellness” Factor: Houseplants aren’t just decor; they are an investment in your wellbeing. They increase humidity in dry, heated rooms and provide a much-needed splash of vibrant colour when the garden is dormant.

What’s in store? This week, we have a fresh delivery of exotic orchids, lush ferns, and hardy succulents. Whether you want a statement piece for your hallway or a small cactus for a shelf, come and explore the collection at Woodbank.
